Railway Mission – “Support on Life’s Journey”
Founded in 1881, Railway Mission now operates a dedicated and professional Christian chaplaincy service to the railway industry. Each of our regionally-based chaplains aims to be an impartial ‘friend’ for those who work on the railways. Regardless of faith, gender, sexual orientation, our chaplains offer face-to-face year around support, especially during an individual’s time of loneliness, stress, depression, bereavement or illness.
Many are experiencing family breakdown, mental ill-health, bereavement, financial difficulties, being victims of crime and much more. Rail staff approach our chaplains for support through these difficult times as a friend and colleague, rather than phone a stranger to receiving counselling support to talk through personal difficulties. But railway chaplains have also supported railway staff and police in the aftermath of the terrorist attracts of recent years and were also present following the Grenfell Tower fire.
“Emotional and spiritual support in a time of crisis is one of the most valuable things you can give to a person. The Railway Mission provides this help to railway staff, the British Transport Police and the travelling public – taking care of the mental welfare of our railway family both day-to-day and following traumatic incidents.”
Sir Peter Hendy CBE, Chair Network Rail
